Tourists and locals alike enjoy the 75-hectare Beacon Hill Park’s many attractions. The Songhees people call the hill Meeacan, which means “belly.” Sir James Douglas, the governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island, designated the territory as a protected reserve in 1858. It was officially designated as a municipal park in 1882, and was given its current name. The name comes from a tiny hill overlooking the Strait where nautical signals originally existed. The hill is culturally significant because it was once a burial ground for the First Nations Coast Salish people.

The 27.5-acre cemetery is part of a public park, and its south side views Ross Bay on the Pacific Ocean. It was named after Isabella Mainville Ross, British Columbia’s first registered independent woman landowner. Alexander Ross, her Métis son, was buried in the cemetery in 1876. His grave marker is the only known original marker in the Old Cemeteries Society’s possession.

Clover Point Park, a tiny little peninsula on Dallas Road, is undoubtedly familiar to Victoria residents and visitors alike. The location is ideal for a relaxing stroll in the sun or for parking your car and watching a raging storm. What you may not be aware of are the fascinating remnants of Clover Point Park’s past.
