The suburb of Flemington is 4 kilometres nortwest of Melbourne’s Central Business District. It’s an inner suburb under the local government area of the cities of Melbourne and Moonee Valley. Flemington is situated between the Maribyrnong River and the Moonee Ponds Creek. Its population is more or less than 8,000. The suburb of Newmarket, which is home to Racecourse Road, the main business center, is part of Flemington.
Settler James Watson named the area after the Flemington Estate in Scotland. Another theory connects the suburb’s name to Robert Fleming, a resident in Brunswick, Victoria. Fleming owned land along the Saltwater River and ran a butcher shop there.
Flemington and Kensington are mostly made up of weatherboard cottages with some linked brick single-storey and double-storey terrace residences. The majority of the houses are Victorian or Boom type, with some Edwardian and Federation style mansions. Originally, factories and industry were located in certain areas.
Since 1861, Flemington Racecourse has hosted the Melbourne Cup Thoroughbred horse competition. The primary business section of the suburb is Racecourse Road. There are a few shops and eateries on Pin Oak Crescent. Pin Oak Crescent, near its intersection with Racecourse Road, is where Newmarket Station is located. Directly west of Newmarket Station, a new shopping center was developed in the late 1990s. It was built on the site of an old car sale yard on Racecourse Road. Behind the Racecourse Road and Pin Oak Crescent stores, several new apartment buildings were constructed on vacant lots. In 2005, Barry Humphries chose the Flemington Post Office on Wellington Street to be his favorite building in Melbourne.
